A Frosted Lake and a Distraught Dog
It was one of those bitterly cold winter mornings when most people cowered at the mere thought of going outside into the extreme weather. Yet on that particular day, an event unfolding at the edge of a frozen lake made everybody stop in their tracks to witness it. A dog was stuck out on the ice with howling winds blowing about a hundred yards away from the shore line, unable to stand properly over its own body as the ice slithered about precariously. Everyone in the crowd gathered around, with urgency in their minds. The dog was already so far away from the shore, exhausted and fearful; hence, it was pretty evident that rescue was needed at once.
For the audience who were watching this scenario, it was distressing. Nobody knew how the dog had ended up so far away from the shore, but what made it the most vulnerable was this sense of urgency. Creaks in the ice could be heard from where the dog was positioned, as if the ice creaked at each of its tiny movements; obviously, any attempt to move the dog might send it into the freezing water below. Onlookers only view in distress while sizing up the fragile state of the ice and realizing that no human being can dare step out there without risking his safety.
Now that the situation has come to be very much a reality, one quickly called for emergency services in hopes that the professionals would arrive before it was too late. Meanwhile, for those who had gathered, there was nothing to do but anxiously wait. Breath was held, hoping that the rescuers would have skills and resources to bring the dog stranded to safety. What they did not know yet was that the rescue they were about to witness would be one of the most courageous rescues and ingenuity.
