The Day the Horse Got Away
It was just a routine morning until the farmer discovered that his horse was missing. He went out to begin his chores at the stable as he had every day. The rising sun threw light all across the fields and yet, there was this cold feeling in his chest. The stall was empty. He then assumed that perhaps the horse wandered off somewhere up near the house, but as hours passed, worry began to creep in.
The farmer rushed about his estate, shouting out the name of his horse. He combed the pastures, the forested edges of his estate, and the windings where they were used to stroll together. All seemed swallowed up- there was no hoofprint, no snapped branch, nothing. It was as if the earth had swallowed it up, leaving no trace behind.
Without explanation or warning, the animal had disappeared. Stricken in heart, such an irreplaceable asset was gone without any hint of what happened to it. Had the horse been stolen? Injured? Lost? He tortured himself with all these possibilities as he searched his land and far beyond in hopes of any clue.
