Tail Chasing – A Playful or Worrisome Habit
Chasing tails may look funny, but this is actually a multi-causal behavior. In kittens and young cats, it could be a form of playing and exploration. It helps practice their hunting skills and expend excess energy.
While frequent tail chasing in adult cats might be a sign of boredom or anxiety, it may also reflect skin irritation or other neurological conditions. So the owner needs to notice this behavior and determine if it is purely playful or potentially problematic.
Interactive toys and mental stimulation can divert the energy of a cat into healthier avenues. If the tail chasing becomes obsessive or shows signs of distress, the veterinarian should be consulted to eliminate health issues.
