Social Norms in the Realm of Appropriate Footage of Drones
Increasing distributed publication of drones capturing inappropriate moments is slowly forcing a change in social norms regarding the concept of privacy. More and more personal moments being captured, there is increasingly greater acceptance of a notion that the person might not be able to fully manage his image. A change in perspective influences people’s behavior when in public, as they know there is always a chance that their actions will be caught.
While so many believe that privacy needs to be protected, many have already resigned themselves to the reality of the increasing number of drone footage. This line of demarcation between private actions or moments has become woefully blurred, especially during public activities, or when people are in their own homes and they think no one is watching them. “Being watched” is becoming the rallying cry of a society which is changing the behavioral patterns associated with public versus private conduct.
At the same time, it also creates new narratives over consent and one’s entitlement over their image. Individuals are becoming street-smart to avoid being filmed even in public. This dawns and redefines what social norms mean in a society which, in turn, needs to rethink what privacy is in the times of drones.
