Humor vs. Harm
While some of the moments captured by drones are quite amusing to be inappropriate, the line between laughable and harm is thin. A few such moments can be slight mishaps caused by traffic or embarrassment. It may appear funny for some in that particular moment, but it would leave a serious psychological blow on the individuals involved. Though people might be laughing at falling someone or embarrassing situation, it brings humiliation to whom so fell or became embarrassing.
The viral nature of drone footage means that once it’s uploaded online, it can easily get out of hand fast. A funny piece of drone footage may make it to the top of the net as a hit, but the person featured in the footage might not be a fan of the spot of attention given. These moments sometimes can also cause reputational damage or lead to personal issues, especially when footage is shared without the consent of the person involved.
While, on one hand, there are some harmless and funny moments captured through a drone, the same might prove embarrassing or hurtful for the other. And as drones get more capable of capturing these moments, so does society need to decide exactly where humor ends and harm begins.
