Minimalism and the Joy of Downsizing
One of the biggest changes Sarah and Jake experienced when moving onto their houseboat was the shift towards minimalism. In order to fit into their small, cozy living space, they had to downsize significantly. This meant getting rid of furniture they no longer needed, donating clothes they hadn’t worn in years, and letting go of sentimental items that no longer served a purpose.
It was hard letting go of some of their stuff at first, as many people tend to accumulate years of belongings, which they consider a part of them. Sarah and Jake realized, though, as they started decluttering that living with fewer things gave them a sense of freedom they had never felt before. They no longer had to think about finding space for the odd items they hadn’t used in ages or spend time cleaning up and organizing.
For the reason that they lived with a lot less than most people, they could have more experience rather than materialistic objects. Sarah and Jake enjoy the little things in life—like spending an evening watching the sunset over the horizon, taking long water walks, or just cooking a meal together in their tiny kitchen. With minimalism, they were able to create a richer and fuller life free of all the perils and pressures of consumerism.
