Vision Behind the Cave House
Starting with a very simple desire, that is to live in a space that would more or less be an extension of earth naturally, the builder brings his dream of a cave house to life. He had envisioned that living in harmony with the land would not only provide for him a unique aesthetic but a peaceful atmosphere, which allows a person to perceive the full beauty of nature. What was interesting about a cave house was the manner in which it brought to mind ancient dwellings, standing over millennia, insulated by rock and nestled in their landscapes, yet at the same time evocative of both stability and resilience.
In planning, the builder knew he wanted something functional and inspiring. The concept was not to live in a cave but to design a home that could harmonize with the natural surroundings at the same time providing modern comfort into it, making it a place of beauty and rest. He wished to introduce large windows to let in natural light, frame panoramic views, mirrored the rugged textures inside, and eco-friendly solutions that minimized the impact of the home on the environment.
Building this vision proved a challenging process-identifying techniques to safely excavate the rock, as well as permits. The builder worked just as hard at learning to accommodate the character of the land as to realize his vision. He met regularly with architects and engineers to modify the plans to erect a structure that respected the land and took advantage of its unique features.
