Bridging the Divide
Since living descendants of the second family were discovered, Emma had to face the challenge of how to reach the relatives and establish a relation. This move did not go well in her family. Some members were overexcited to see their long-lost relatives, while others preferred to be left alone; after all, revisiting old wounds or rejection is never in anybody’s wish.
She penned a beautiful letter to the second family’s descendants, stating that she would love to get in touch in a way that respects everyone’s boundaries. She attached a copy of the photograph as well as her research findings. The response was overwhelming. The descendants of the second family were just as interested in their shared history and eager to learn more.
Their first meeting was a fusion of awkward, excited, and even joyful emotions. They shared stories, questions and answers, and connections. Ideally, they both longed to honor the same heritage by moving forward together despite their differences.
