Forgiveness
As the two families became closer, they began discussing the lessons that could be learned from their experience. Forgiveness was perhaps one of the most central themes. What Emma’s great-grandfather did may have grieved the present generations, but understanding the context of his choices helped both families move past anger and resentment.
Forgiveness didn’t at all mean acting like he approved of what he was doing; in fact, it freed the families to go on with their lives from this point henceforth and be together. They learned everyone has imperfections in every family and that embracing this only deepens the understanding and bond between them.
Forgiveness also did not stop at the immediate family. Both families were brought to start questioning their own relationships and working to deal with conflicts with a more compassionate and open mindset. This became a rippling effect that found healing far beyond the discovery horizon.
