Immediate Aftermath
Days became months, but it was all a blur for the husband as he could not fathom the enormity of what had befallen. He simply could not believe that the woman he had just married, whom he had promised his life to, was gone. The jovial wedding that he had so enthusiastically prepared turned into a funeral; and the wife he married left the world much too soon.
Reality was just setting in-the husband needed to deal with the logistics and emotional aspects of a losing a spouse, so first and foremost, he planned the funeral, contacted family, and generally just dealt with the gory grief that seems to follow the sudden loss. Amidst all this, though, was something keeping him connected with her-that is, her belongings.
In silence, solitude gave him reason to search through the belongings of the woman that he hoped he could find some comfort in it. Her clothes, the books she read, her personal notes—these were all that were remaining of the woman he loved. Meanwhile, going through that pile of objects, he realized that parts of her life went unknown to him, and it was in this way that the unlikeliest discovery would arrive.
